Long uphill threshold efforts; 2 x 30’, 2 x 20’, 40’, 5 x10’ etc.
Biggest lesson pre-race
Don’t get carried away on easy runs when you’re training on steep terrain. Often a hike is more than enough to get the hr up.
What went well?
I paced the race well and found a nice group to sit in for the first 20 miles. We were in positions 4th to about 7th. Then I had the confidence to push on and caught up with 1st by about 60 miles.
What will you improve for next time?
Always making sure I’m taking enough fuel to make it to the next aid station. The race went very well other than about 10k where I ran out of gels and water after a very silly fueling mistake!
Advice for others thinking of this race?
It is a very runnable race until the last 10-15k. If you’re not planning on using poles in the race I would definitely consider it for the last climb up to Eagles nest. The last 3k downhill is horrible so don’t get disheartened if it’s taking you longer than 15 minutes per km!
Best bit of kit for the race?
The first 3 hours of the race was in the dark and I always feel like it is worth having a decent head torch, especially in Australia when you’re trying to avoid things like snakes. I used the nitecore HC65 UHE and it was fantastic. It has great battery life and 2000 lumen max output making running in the dark a lot easier!

Coaches comments
Morgan managed a difficult taper where his A race at the Grampian Peaks Trail 100 miler was curtailed by an insect bite reaction the week of the race but he had trained excellently and was able to recover from the bite and adapt towards Kosci seamlessly. And his race execution, absolutely spot on.
