Q&A

Favourite / key session

Progressive long run. Starting off with some easy running, then into some steady work then into threshold.

Biggest lesson pre-race

You can maintain a lot of fitness on the bike so don’t run through any niggles that might mean you can’t make the start line!

What went well?

I paced the race well, going off slow and building into it and was also on top of cooling with an ice bandana and cold water at aid stations. Low 20s is still quite hot when running for such a long period of time.

What will you improve for next time?

The race went really well however to improve further I think there were some hills I could have maybe pushed harder and ran up instead of walking. I think I would also aim to take on more carbs than the 70-80g an hour I managed in the race.

Advice for others thinking of this race?

There’s a great selection of food and drink at the aid stations but try not to spend too long there! Just get in, grab what you need and start walking out the aid station, especially if you are worried about cut offs.

Best bit of kit for the race?

For me having a handheld water flask was my favourite bit of kit for this race. Personally it’s a race I wouldn’t use poles in so having it in my hand the whole race made it less effort to drink compared with removing a flask from a pack, and therefore I found it easier to stay hydrated.

Coaches comments

Despite some cross training needed in the build-up (a perfect race preparation is a rare thing), Morgan started the race with an excellent level of control and this paid off in the second half when he was able to surge through the field to the podium. It was brilliant that I could join to pace him for the final section and see first hand his drive to do his absolute best.
